The Kentucky Lottery says the Mega Millions jackpot is closer to $1 billion ahead of Friday's drawing.

Officials raised the estimated jackpot Thursday for the second time because of strong sales ahead of Friday night's drawing for what would be the second-largest lottery jackpot in USA history. They are among the 2,191,856 people across the country who won prizes after Wednesday's drawing, majority winning the lowest possible prize of $4, according to the Powerball.

Powerball and Mega Millions are the two games with the largest payouts offered by the N.C. Education Lottery, and both are sold in many other states.

The email features the Mega Millions logo as part of the letterhead, and states that the recipient was among a group of randomly selected people to participate in an ongoing drawing. The amount you will win is likely $0, because the odds of winning either jackpot are one in several hundred million.

Information from the Associated Press was used in this report.

Officials say no tickets matched all six numbers to claim the Mega Millions prize Tuesday night. According to a release from Mega Millions, the last Mega Millions jackpot was won July 24, netting 11 co-workers a combined $543 million.

Three tickets sold in North Carolina were among the 100 $10,000 winners nationwide, lottery officials said.

Saturday's jackpot will be $430 million.

The next Powerball drawing is at 11 p.m. EST Saturday.

Since Mega Millions modified the formula, players now pick five numbers from 1 to 70 and a Mega number of 1 to 25.

For an additional $1 you can get a "Megaplier" ticket that will increase the amount of the smaller prizes, but not the grand prize.

Here's how Mega Millions used to work: Players picked five numbers from 1 to 75 and a Mega number from 1 to 15.
