According to a Times of India report, the actor's decision comes after the film's most high-profile star, Akshay Kumar, said he wouldn't work with proven sexual offenders.

The statement about Nana Patekar's exit from the project arrived hours after Sajid Khan - who was directing Housefull 4 - signed his resignation from the project on Twitter after being accused of sexual harassment by three women in individual #MeToo accounts.

Akshay Kumar, a strict disciplinarian, has cancelled a mega film stating, "I have just landed back in the country last night and reading all the news has been very disturbing". Following this, Sajid Khan said he would step from as the director of movie Houseful 4, adding, "I request my friends in the media to kindly not pass judgement till the truth is out". He tweeted saying, "I can not adequately stress how shocked, disappointed and heartbroken I am to read the stories about Sajid's behaviour". Everyone involved in 'Housefull' needs to take a firm stance on this issue. Sajid, who was the director of the film, too had issued a statement saying he was stepping down as the director of the film. The latest to face the wrath were filmmakers Subhash Ghai and Sajid Khan. Soon after his return to Mumbai, Nana Patekar briefly met the media and said: "My lawyer has asked me to not talk to any channel, have to listen to him".

Actor Saloni Chopra on Thursday wrote a Medium post detailing the various forms of sexual harassment and violence perpetrated by director Sajid Khan, actor Zain Durrani and director Vikas Bahl.

The film also stars Nana Patekar, who was the first celebrity to be accused of harassment by actor Tanushree Dutta a fortnight ago.

Actor Saloni Chopra recounted that he would only talk of his genitalia when she worked as an assistant director with him.

Indian journalist Karishma Upadhyay detailed two incidents where she was harassed by Sajid; once when she went to interview him in the early 2000s and another time when she was asked to work with him on MTV. He asked questions like if she has ever been sexually abused or if she would ever get a breast job and opined how sex is about a mental connection.
