Frosty start to US-China talks on North Korea

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Chinese Foreign Minister and State Councillor Wang Yi aired their grievances in the open on Monday during a brief visit to Beijing by Washington's top diplomat, amid worsening relations.

Pompeo said it is important for the two allies to have a "fully coordinated, unified view of how to proceed, which will be what is needed if we are going to be successful on denuclearizing North Korea".

Pompeo held talks with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in Pyongyang, before landing in Seoul on a whirlwind diplomatic visit to the region.

Kim expressed enthusiasm for the future of talks between the two nations.

The possibility of a summit between Kim and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is also "open", Moon said, adding: "A new order is being created on the Korean peninsula".

"We hope the United States and China can meet each other halfway and conscientiously fulfill the important consensus reached by the leaders of both countries", Yang said.

North Korea's state-run news agency KCNA, meanwhile, said Monday that Kim had "expressed his will and conviction that a great progress would surely be made in solving the issues of utmost concern of the world".

Pompeo and Wang did find common ground in opposing the nuclear threat from North Korea.

Pompeo spent around three-and-a-half hours with Kim in Pyongyang on Sunday, in a formal meeting and then at lunch, in talks he later described as "productive" and "another step forward" in negotiations to convince North Korea to give up its nuclear weapons program.

Mr Pompeo went there to discuss Pyongyang's nuclear disarmament and set up another meeting between Mr Kim and President Donald Trump following on from June's summit in Singapore.

"We believe this has been a direct attack on our mutual trust, and has cast a shadow on China-U.S. relations", he continued. He came away from it saying the two sides had made progress, only for North Korea to denounce him for making "gangster-like" demands and raising "cancerous" issues.

Pompeo and Wang openly disagreed over which side had called off a two-way security dialogue that had been planned in Beijing this month.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo arrives at Osan Air Base in Pyeongtaek on Sunday after his Pyongyang trip.

The inspectors will visit a missile engine test facility and the Punggye-ri nuclear testing site as soon as the logistics are worked out, Pompeo said.

State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert seconded the "unified" approach on North Korea, but cited "areas where the United States and China do not agree, including on the South China Sea and human rights", according to a statement.

"I know that you would like to discuss the North Korea issue and other relational issues with me on this visit", Wang said.

"The United States is continuing to act against Chinese interests, including the U.S".

A key issue highlighted by one former USA official who has spoken to North Korean officials in recent months is that the definition Kim's regime has of denuclearization is far more expansive than it is for the U.S.

"I would certainly expect so", the official said.
