Trump, at Kansas rally, praises Kavanaugh, slams Democrats

Joe Manchin of West Virginia despite his help confirming Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court.

Republican Senator Susan Collins, who voted for Kavanaugh after a cliff-hanger, said it was a "confirmation process that has become so dysfunctional, it looks more like a caricature of a gutter-level political campaign than a solemn occasion". "I have to do what I think is right, and that's what I did", she told WCSH-TV.

Hours after the narrow Senate vote, Trump also said he is "100 percent certain" that Kavanaugh did not commit sexual assault, and that Democrats used Ford's story to mount a "horrible, disgusting attack" on the nominee.

Trump told a raucous rally in Kansas late Saturday that the confirmation marked "a tremendous victory for our nation, our people and our beloved Constitution". That balanced out the absence without affecting the outcome, and gave Kavanaugh the same two-vote margin he'd have received had both lawmakers voted.

But after an 11th-hour investigation by the FBI into the allegations, enough wavering senators chose to back the nomination.

His nomination was marked by allegations of sexual misconduct when he was a high school and college student.

His confirmation provides a defining accomplishment for President Donald Trump and the Republican Party, which found a unifying force in the cause of putting a new conservative majority on the court.

Collins had announced her plans to vote for Kavanaugh during a 40-minute speech on the Senate floor on Friday.

Ford testified last week before the Senate Judiciary Committee that she had been sexually assaulted by Kavanaugh when they were teenagers.

Mr Schumer said that for all those who opposed the nomination, "there is one answer - vote" in the November mid-term elections.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said on Saturday that "nothing unifies Republicans like a court fight".

Democratic senator Ben Cardin of Maryland noted that several key issues framing the November 6 election - women's reproductive rights, the Mueller investigation into Russia's role in the 2016 election and Republican attempts to roll back the Obamacare health program - could all come before a Supreme Court pitched to the right by Kavanaugh's presence. Protests against Kavanaugh - who will now serve a lifetime appointment after overcoming credible allegations of sexual assault, which he denied - continued outside the Capitol and Supreme Court during the ceremony.

When Flake cast his vote in favor of Kavanaugh, one protester shouted, "You're a coward Flake, a total coward!"

Warren is using the Kavanaugh confirmation as a main talking point as she considers a run for president in 2020.

When Vice President Mike Pence, who presided over the vote, exited the Senate, he was booed and.

But before reporters dug into that, she was asked about her husband calling African countries "shitholes", saying "I never heard him saying those comments".

Residents of a townhouse near the Washington home of Senator Susan Collins, a moderate Republican whose backing helped get Kavanaugh over the line on Saturday, flew the flag of the lawmaker's home state ME upside down in protest. "If they won't listen to our voices, then they'll listen to our vote". However, based on all of the information I have available to me, including the recently completed Federal Bureau of Investigation report, I have found Judge Kavanaugh to be a qualified jurist who will follow the Constitution and determine cases based on the legal findings before him. "What she was trying to do was what she thought was the right thing to do as a citizen, which is to provide the information to the U.S. Senate so they could make the most informed decision possible".
