Democrats’ Kavanaugh assassination is re-uniting the right

Democrats are complaining the FBI investigation is inconclusive and say they failed to interview key witnesses.

Among them were three of the chamber's moderate Republicans, Senators Jeff Flake of Arizona, Susan Collins of ME and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, and Senator Joe Manchin, a Democrat up for re-election in conservative West Virginia. Ford alleged that Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her at a social gathering during their high school years in the early 1980's. Kavanaugh vehemently denied all those claims.

Nearly a year had passed since Collins condemned Franken, and Friday she stood up and defended Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, who has been accused of sexual assault.

Here's what she tells reporters traveling with her in Egypt: "I think he's highly qualified for the Supreme Court". There would be no way to make it acceptable. She later hugged a Capitol Hill police officer and thanked him and others for their work in what has been a two-week period of protests on the Capitol grounds. She said, however, that she sets a high bar for nominees to win confirmation and talked about the importance of selecting judges who will act at all times in a manner that promotes "public confidence" in the judiciary. "So, therefore, it's not valid, you know, it's not valid that it was him, even though that type of memory does not get mistaken, does not go away". Justice Anthony Kennedy, whom Mr Kavanaugh would replace, retired this year after decades of being a swing vote on the court.

On the other hand, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer accused Kavanaugh of being skeptical of abortion rights and executive accountability.

Senator Cory Booker of New Jersey, one of the Democrats who voted against the motion and has vocally opposed Kavanaugh's nomination since accusations of sexual assault arose in July, lamented the vote's passing on CNN. Some disrupted the vote in the Senate chambers. Lisa Murkowski voted against moving the nomination forward.

Collins also said she rejected Democratic arguments that Kavanaugh's judicial philosophy was outside the mainstream, pointing to his track record on the D.C. Circuit Court of honoring Supreme Court precedent.

"I do not believe that those charges can fairly prevent Judge Kavanaugh from serving on the court", Collins said. Steve Daines (R-Mont.), who supports Kavanaugh but was away at his daughter's wedding.

The vote caps a contest fought against the backdrop of the #MeToo movement and President Donald Trump's unyielding support of his Supreme Court nominee. As I've said previously, my job is to assess the facts before us and the fact remains that no evidence exists to support the allegations made against Judge Kavanaugh. Flake said that while he would vote yes in the committee, he wanted the Senate to delay its floor vote so the Federal Bureau of Investigation could reopen its background check into Kavanaugh.
