Brett Kavanaugh the Supreme Court nominee during his heated testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee

GOP Senate leaders brushed aside Democrats' demands for a 24-hour delay between the production of a new Federal Bureau of Investigation background report and the vote on Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh.

"What neighbourhood was it in?" I don't know. Where's the house? I don't know. I don't know. 'I don't know.' Upstairs, downstairs, where was it? "'I don't remember, '" Trump said at the rally Tuesday in Southaven.

A lawyer for Mr Judge - a childhood friend of Mr Kavanaugh - said on Monday that his client's interview "has not been completed". Jeff Flake (Ariz.), a key swing vote in the Kavanaugh confirmation, said there's "no time and no place" for remarks like that, adding that they were "not right" and "kind of appalling".

But he added: "I never saw him passed out but I saw him quite drunk".

Well, I say that it's a very scary time for young men in America, when you can be guilty of something that you may not be guilty of.

"The president's remarks were just plain wrong", Sen. Lisa Murkowski called them "wholly inappropriate".

The Republicans hold a narrow 51-49 advantage in the Senate heading into the November election.

President Trump said that if Kavanaugh did lie to Congress, then "that would not be acceptable", but the White House has said the administration does not feel that Kavanaugh lied under oath.

In a separate remarks, the president's son Donald Trump Jr said he was more anxious for his sons than his daughters in the current climate which they see being tilted against men. He said he expects senators to hurry over to the Judiciary Committee to read it once it's done.

"A vicious, vile and soulless attack on Dr. Christine Blasey Ford", tweeted Michael Bromwich, a former high-ranking Department of Justice official who is now representing the professor.

Several people with information related to the allegations against Kavanaugh have said they have tried in vain to speak with the FBI, which is due to wrap up its investigation this week.

Flake was instrumental in getting Trump last Friday to initiate an FBI investigation into the allegations against Kavanaugh, a conservative federal appeals court judge nominated by the president for a lifetime job on the top USA court.

A vote to confirm Mr Kavanaugh has been delayed as the FBI investigates the claims, which he denies.

Trump spoke to a capacity crowd at the 8,400-seat Landers Center, with people lining up more than 12 hours before the event began at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday evening. But the memo is clearly aimed at assuaging the concerns of a handful of GOP senators who are on the fence about whether to vote to confirm Kavanaugh and are considering whose story - Ford's or Kavanaugh's - to believe.

Opposition among Americans to Kavanaugh has increased in the wake of last week's hearing, Reuters/Ipsos polling data showed on Wednesday.

A 21-year-old Dom Cozzolino accused the college-aged Kavanaugh of throwing ice on him in the September 1985 incident, which was recorded in a police report that was obtained by The New York Times.

Trump's Ford mocking is not the problem, the White House representative told reporters.

McConnell said that since Ford's original letter became public, "a literal mudslide of wild, uncorroborated accusations have poured out". Along with allegations of sexual assault and lack of truthfulness, they must decide whether Kavanaugh has so discredited his own stature as an impartial arbiter that putting him on the Supreme Court risk permanently damaging the judiciary. Mitch McConnell, saying lawmakers should have a chance to digest and talk about the report before they have to decide on the judge's fate.
