Teen boy attacked by shark in Encinitas

Spokesman Carlos Delgado of Rady Children's Hospital-San Diego released the boy's condition late Saturday afternoon, more than nine hours after the attack.

The attack occurred just before 7am during the opening hour of California's spiny lobster season.

The group of friends - some of whom had medical training - tried to keep the boy calm and put pressure on his wounds as blood filled their kayak.

A teen diver was bitten by a shark Saturday morning off a beach in the San Diego County community of Encinitas.

"We're asking people not to go in the water", Giles said.

Lifeguards had been on duty due to two nearby events, and Giles said the response to the attack was "very short".

Hearing the boy scream, the source heard the teen exclaim, "I got bit".

The group paddled over to the boy and pulled him onto the kayak.

Emergency responders arrived, and the boy was flown by helicopter to a trauma centre.

The shark, estimated to be 11 feet long, has not been seen again, Giles told KNSD. Capt Giles noted there were multiple other divers in the area.

"This is a nonfatal incident; we don't want anybody else getting injured", he said.

On Sept. 15, a man died at a Cape Cod hospital after police say he was attacked by a shark off a Wellfleet, Massachusetts, beach. One scheduled surf event was canceled. They plan to monitor the area for sharks via boat, helicopter and drones.

A teenager has been attacked by a shark while diving for lobsters, in the US.

A 13-year-old boy is in a critical condition after being bitten by a shark at a United States beach. "I always wondered what I would do in this situation and glad I swam towards him and got him to shore".

"At this time, we have not received additional reports of any shark sightings in the area but are advising the public to stay out of the water".
