Areas covered by watches due to what the weather service's Las Vegas office calls "abundant tropical moisture from Hurricane Rosa" include southern Nevada, southeastern California, southwestern and central Utah and the western two-thirds of Arizona.

It's rare for a hurricane or tropical storm to impact the southwestern USA, but CNN meteorologist Gene Norman says, "These events have begun to increase in recent years".

High surf up to 10 feet and rip currents will begin along southern California coast Sunday, the hurricane center said.

Hurricane Rosa was spinning toward the Baja Peninsula on Sunday as a Category 1 storm with sustained winds of 85 miles per hour, the National Hurricane Center said.

The best chance for rain in Mohave County is late Sunday night into early Monday morning.

Rosa weakened from a Category 4 storm earlier in the day.

Rosa, with maximum sustained winds decreasing to nearly 120 miles per hour (195 kph), was now a Category 3 storm, coming down a notch on the five-step Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center said Rosa should still be at tropical storm force when it hits the Baja California Peninsula and Sonora state on Monday with flooding rains.

"A gradual turn toward the west-northwest and northwest is expected on Friday, followed by a turn toward the north on Saturday and a turn toward the north-northeast on Sunday", the NHC said.
