Indonesian transport ministry shut down the SIS Al-Jufrie airport at 7:26 p.m. local time Friday (1126 GMT) and will reopen it at 7:20 p.m. local time Saturday (1120 GMT Saturday), spokesman Sindu Rahayu said.

Indonesia's seismological agency BMKG put the magnitude at 7.4.

Patients are evacuated from a hospital following a strong natural disaster in Poso, central Sulawesi, Indonesia. Just hours before the 7.5-magnitude quake triggered the tsunami, Sulawesi was rocked by a 6.1-magnitude quake.

"Many houses have collapsed", said an official with the local disaster agency, Akris.

Five people are feared dead after a tsunami crashed through an Indonesian coastal city demolishing houses and leaving families missing.

Dwikorita Karnawati, the chief of Indonesia's meteorology and geophysics agency, told Reuters that the tsunami "receded", but it caused severe damage.

Sutopo Purow Nugroho, a National Disaster Mitigation Agency spokesman, said communications with the earthquake-stricken region were disrupted.

In this photo released by the Disaster Management Agency, a house sits damaged after a magnitude 6.1 quake early Friday, Sept. 28, 2018, in Donggala, central Sulawesi, Indonesia.

The area was hit by a lighter quake earlier in the day, which destroyed some houses, killing one person and injuring at least 10 in Donggala.

Other pictures showed major damage to buildings with rubble strewn about the road and large cracks running through pavement. "It has ended. The situation is chaotic, people are running on the streets and buildings collapsed".

Another series of strong quakes in mid-August killed at least a dozen on Lombok and neighboring Sumbawa island.

Magnitude 7.5-quake launches tsnunami into Indonesian city of Palu with deaths and injuries unknown.

In December 2004, a massive magnitude 9.1 natural disaster off Sumatra in western Indonesia triggered a tsunami that killed 230,000 people in a dozen countries, including more than 120,000 in Indonesia.

"Telecommunication operators have been trying to use mobile backup power to reactivate the telecommunication network", Minister Rudiantara said in a press statement on Friday night.

Indonesia is prone to quake as it lies on a vulnerable quake-affected area popularly known as "the Pacific Ring of Fire".
