Ryder Cup: Europe roars back in afternoon sessions

How to watch Tiger Woods at the Ryder Cup on Friday

Koepka acknowledged his teammate's good fortune on No. 16, "but to come out in his first Ryder Cup and play the way he did, I'm proud of him and glad to have him as my teammate".

Justin Rose and Henrik Stenson reunited their highly successful partnership to hammer Dustin Johnson and Rickie Fowler 3 and 2 having been 5-up after 11.

American Koepka's drive on the par-four sixth hole veered into the gallery on the left of the green and appeared to strike the woman in the right eye.

The Americans got off to the start they wanted before the European crowd, which was out in numbers and filled the massive grandstand that seats just under 7,000 around the first tee.

Sergio Garcia and Alex Noren vs. Phil Mickelson and Bryson DeChambeau. It was a tough spot to put DeChambeau in, both metaphorically and practically, considering some of the places Lefty had the Ryder Cup rookie play from on Day 1.

McIlroy and Ian Poulter, who sat out the fourballs, have slipped to 2-down against Webb Simpson and Bubba Watson after five holes of the foursomes at Le Golf National.

Jordan Spieth rolled in a testy 3-footer for par at the 18th hole to close out a 1-up victory over Paul Casey and Tyrrell Hatton.

Fortunately for Woods and Reed, their teammates picked them up as the USA took a 3-1 lead after the morning session. Although Tommy Fleetwood and Francesco Molinari spared a whitewash by beating Tiger Woods and Patrick Reed, the overall picture was bleak and the form of McIlroy worrying - grim and grimmer. He followed with a 35-foot birdie putt, crouching to watch as it broke into the cup.

American captain Jim Furyk opted to deploy two of the three winning duos from the morning session-Johnson and Fowler, and Thomas and Spieth-in the afternoon while subbing out the Brooks Koepka and Tony Finau, the team that came back to beat Justin Rose and Jon Rahm in the morning session. Logically, Finau and Koepka will be paired together again Saturday morning, and then all 12 players from each side will compete in Sunday's singles matches.

The pairing lost seven of the first nine holes and looked out of sorts after Mickelson found the water while laying up with an iron off the par-5 3rd tee.
