Mourinho denied any falling out with Pogba when confirming the decision, but Sky Sports' footage from training the following morning suggested all is not well.

But then, as he shook hands with one of the team management members, Mourinho said something, which caused Pogba to turn around and look angrily at the Portuguese mentor.

Former Premier League midfielder Craig Burley says Mourinho made the right call taking away his leadership responsibilities.

Mourinho observes that the World Cup is a ideal forum for Pogba-a quick-moving, month-long competition with no room for distraction.

According to The Times, Mourinho informed Pogba of his decision on the captaincy in front of his teammates yesterday, claiming the 25-year-old "doesn't represent what a captain is and Manchester United is bigger than anyone".

Barcelona reportedly submitted a bid for Pogba in the summer, but it wasn't a realistic offer - £45m and Yerry Mina and Andre Gomes.

The World Cup victor didn't feature in that game but United were deservedly defeated by the Championship side, despite taking the lead.

Manchester United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward has backed Jose Mourinho despite the club's indifferent start to the season.

As revealed by ESPN FC, Mourinho told Pogba of his decision on Tuesday, just a day after the £89.3 million midfielder had spoken out to demand that United deploy more adventurous, attacking tactics at Old Trafford.

Furthermore, Mourinho's treatment of Pogba and other players has "angered and frustrated" many Manchester United players, ESPN's Mark Ogden reported Wednesday, citing sources.

The report added: "The players were happy with that decision and the reasons behind the manager's decision".

"I'm not saying Mourinho is innocent, he's clearly not, but there are too many players hiding".

Pogba defended his comments earlier this week on his desire to see United "attack, attack, attack" after Saturday's 1-1 draw with Wolves.

Pogba enjoyed an impressive World Cup and his intention was not to return to Old Trafford, but he had little choice and while he continues in Manchester for now, it seems only a matter of time before the player moves on.

Mourinho has also stripped the France worldwide of the vice captaincy.
