Israel Warns Russia Over 'Dangers' Of Supplying Syria With Advanced Air Defenses

Russia announced on Monday that it will supply the Syrian government with modern S-300 missile defence systems following last week's downing of a Russian plane by Syria, a friendly fire incident that send regional tensions over the war-torn country soaring.

The Russian military has said that Israel's air force informed its command in Syria via the established de-confliction hotline, but only one minute before the air strikes - and gave the wrong target location.

Shoigu did not say that this was meant to prevent Israel from reaching target areas in Syria and disrupting its missiles or bombs, but it is clear that the Israeli Air Force (IAF) planes and its precision munitions are the target of the measures.

Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu said Moscow had in the past obliged Israel by refraining from providing Syria with the S-300.

After Russia announced Monday that it will soon supply its advanced S-300 missile systems to Syria, the Trump administration was quick to join Israel in expressing its objection.

According to Russia, Israeli F-16s flew in low under the Il-20 to either shield themselves from air defense fire or make Syrian air defenses, which use outdated technology, shoot down the bigger, easier to spot Il-20 rather than the sleeker F-16s.

The episode happened after Israeli jets struck a military facility in Western Syria that Israel said contained weapons-manufacturing systems that were to be transferred to Hezbollah.

The meeting also reportedly tackled the implications of Russia's decision to provide Syria with the S-300 system, delivery of which is expected within two weeks. Neither of those two players could hope to overcome Israel's military superiority in the area, but for the Israeli government it is the impunity that matters as much as the ability to launch strikes.

Israel has been vocal in its opposition to deployment of the S-300 missile systems in Syria, warning that they would strike the defenses if they were used against Israeli forces.

But Israel's and the Israel Defense Forces' high-tech and cyber capabilities will probably be able to deal with this threat after a long period of examination and adaptation.

However, on September 17th the same Russian ministry said "connection with the IL-20 has been lost with the crew of a Russian Il-20 plane over the Mediterranean Sea 35 kilometers from the Syrian coast".

"We will do what is necessary to defend Israel's security", Netanyahu said. The incident killed 15 Russians. "One thing needs to be clear: If someone shoots at our planes, we will destroy them", he explained.

However, U.S. -Russian relations remain at their lowest point in decades, in part over differences in Syria, Ukraine and U.S. allegations Russia meddled in the 2016 U.S. election. "Most importantly, this will guarantee that Russian aircraft are identified by Syrian air defences", he said.

But defence analysts have highlighted the risk of clashes between foreign armed forces in Syria's seven-year war, given the complex web of alliances and competing military aims of the nations involved.

"According to information of our military experts, the reason [behind the downing] were premeditated actions by Israeli pilots which certainly can not but harm our relations", Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told journalists.
