Earlier, he had won the UEFA's men's player of the year award for the 2017-18 season. "But I think it is also very positive to recognize the work, the career and the season of players that are not just strikers".

Looking at the player voting cards, its quite clear that players vote for their teammates rather than who they think is actually the best.

The Croatian's gong completed a terrific night for Madrid, who dominated the FIFA FIFPro World XI, with Sergio Ramos, Marcelo and Raphael Varane joining Modric in the team.

Croatia fell just short of a fairytale World Cup title, losing to France in the final in Russian Federation.

"I am happy because other players are recognised, the ones before deserved to win but couldn't do it", Modric said.

The best Federation Internationale de Football Association women's player award was given to Brazil global Marta, after impressive displays for both her national side and club team Orlando Pride.

"Everyone has their own reasons", said Modric.

Nine different categories were decided with the Goalkeeper of the Year going to Belgium goalkeeper, Thibaut Courtois, while Didier Deschamps won the Coach of the Year for guiding France to win the World Cup in Russian Federation. Jonathan Wilson noted, after watching the premiere of Cristiano Ronaldo's feature film, how important the title meant to him, going as far as to claim that it was more important to him than the team titles he had won.

"Ronaldo and Messi's absence is disrespectful to their fellow players, to FIFA, and to the football world", Capello told Television Espanola.

Tonight at the Royal Festival Hall on the Southbank however, previous winners Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi failed to attend, giving some indication as to how some of the votes would sway this evening, with some shocks and surprises expected. Mohamed Salah's curling effort against Everton won that award.

"Of course I would change everything to have won in Russian Federation".

His compatriot Reynald Pedros picked up the women's coach award after leading Lyon's women's team to a league and Champions League double.

Real Madrid new boy Thibault Courtois was handed Best Goalkeeper for his performances for Chelsea past year, although was curiously beaten by Manchester United's Spanish goalkeeper David de Gea to a place in the Fifa All-Star Team.
