New Bumblebee teaser features G1 Optimus Prime and Soundwave

The new Bumblebee trailer shows that young Charlie Watson (Hailee Steinfeld) gets more than she bargained for when she buys an old yellow Volkswagen Beetle for her 18th birthday and finds the Beetle transforming into Bumblebee, the little Autobot that could.

Bumblebee will release on December 21 this year. The film is the sixth in the Transformers live-action series following 2017's Transformers: The Last Knight, the final film to be directed Michael Bay, who has directed every film in the series so far.

The clip sees teenage mechanic Charlie Watson (Hailee Steinfeld) arrive at a junkyard and take home the auto that ends up transforming into the titular robot, with the two forming a bond as Charlie helps Bumblebee fight back against the film's villains.

More importantly, it has plenty of G1 character designs too - with Bumblebee (and Optimus Prime, glimpsed in a hologram) returned to the plasticky shapes we all know and love. Bumblebee stars Cena in the role of a villain this time around, a military general who assists invading Transformers in tracking down our titular hero. Was that Soundwave? I'm not even that big a fan of Transformers, but I can only imagine how these brief images are a form of catharsis to fans of classic Transformers who are undoubtedly exhausted of all the bits and pieces from Michael Bay's aesthetic.

The film sees Bumblebee taking refuge in a small Californian beach town junkyard, where a teenage girl, Charlie (Steinfeld), takes him in. The film seems to have a much smaller scale considering it is still a Transformers film. What do you think of the new trailers?
