Dallas police officer Amber Guyger was sacked Monday, officials said, weeks after a racially-charged shooting in which the off-duty white cop killed her black neighbor, Botham Jean.

Amber Guyger was charged with manslaughter in connection with the September 6 shooting death of 26-year-old Botham Jean.

Officer Amber Guyger had been dismissed after almost five years on the job for her actions on the night of the shooting earlier in September, Dallas Police Chief U. Renee Hall said in a statement.

Guyger can appeal her firing through the city's civil service rules. Following the completion of the Texas Rangers' and the Dallas County District Attorney's Office's investigations in the case, it will be up to a grand jury to decide whether to indict Guyger for murder, manslaughter or not at all. The Texas Rangers are conducting a separate investigation from the Dallas Police Department and have already taken Guyger's statement. She was released on bond shortly after.

"We see it as an initial victory-well received on the day Botham Jean is laid to rest in his native country in St. Lucia", Lee expressed. Still in her uniform, Guyger parked on the fourth floor of the complex and walked to what she believed was her apartment, according to an arrest warrant affidavit.

On Thursday, Hall said she did not want to risk interfering with a criminal investigation by making a decision about Guyger's employment.

Reports indicate that Guyger realized she was in the wrong apartment only after calling 911 to report the altercation.

Investigators are seeking security footage to trace the white Dallas police officer's movements the night she killed her black neighbor in his own apartment earlier this month. She then drew her weapon and fired twice at Jean, the affidavit said.

When she turned on the lights, she realized she was in the wrong unit, according to the document, which appeared to be based nearly entirely upon the officer's account.

She issued verbal commands, but Jean, being in his own home, did not heed them, and Guyger fired two shots, hitting him once in the torso, the affidavit said.

Guyger had been on administrative leave since the shooting occurred. Moments after, Jean was pronounced dead.
