Indian Navy's yachtsman, Commander Abhilash Tomy, has been rescued after grueling three days of treacherous seas in the Indian Ocean. Speaking to reporters, his father said that the officer was exhausted and dehydrated but conscious. The storm, which is said to have partly damaged the boats of at least two other race participants, broke SV Thuriya's main mast.

Friday's storm, which damaged the vessel, whipped up 70-knot winds and 14-metre waves, and also knocked down the yacht of another competitor, Dutchman Mark Slats, twice. Organizers of the 30,000-mile race said the stricken sailor was "as far from help as you could possibly be".

A French ship has rescued an Indian sailor injured in a gruelling round-the-world race, an organiser confirmed to Euronews on Monday.

After boats from the French vessel managed to extract Tomy from his yacht, Indian reporter Shiv Aroor said the commander was "doing okay, conscious & in good spirits". Australian Naval vessel HMAS Ballarat, which set off from Perth on Saturday will reach the spot on Tuesday.

"However, given the extremely remote location and the condition of his yacht, it was deemed the appropriate course of action to abandon his yacht under a controlled evacuation scenario as the opportunity arose. CANNOT GET UP". He then did not communicate for almost 15 hours.

A French fisheries patrol vessel, Osiris, with onboard medical facilities, is in the area and is expected to reach the Thuriya on Monday evening.

India's defense minister, Nirmala Sitharaman, tweeted that it was "a sense of relief to know that naval officer" Abhilash Tomy was "rescued by the French fishing vessel".

Tomy has covered 52,000 miles (84,000 km) under sail while in the Indian navy, including a solo non-stop circumnavigation from Mumbai in 2012/13, it said.

Mr Tomy's boat has been floating about 1,900 miles south-west of Perth since the incident.

The rescue mission was jointly coordinated between Indian and Australian Navy.

"Spoke to VCNS VAdm Ajit Kumar P, AVSM, VSM regarding the condition of injured navy officer @abhilashtomy. He is conscious. He is fine", Indian Navy spokesperson Capt. D K Sharma told CNN.

"The ship joins a P-8A Poseidon from the Adelaide-based Surveillance and Response Group [from the] Royal Australian Air Force, which has been deployed to Réunion Island, France, to assist in the search", the ADF said in a statement. INS Satpura, an India Navy vessel which was in the South India Ocean is also proceeding to the spot.
