New England Patriots land Josh Gordon from Cleveland Browns in surprise trade

Instead, there was sufficient interest from other National Football League teams for them to negotiate trade parameters. According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Gordon's release was not in response to a substance abuse violation or failed drug test - something that has plagued the talented receiver throughout his six-year tenure in Cleveland.

The Patriots are sending a conditional fifth-round draft choice to the Browns for Gordon.

Gordon's strained hamstring is not serious and he's expected to play in Week 3 against the Lions. Rather than outright releasing Gordon, the Browns are now trying to trade him to get something in return.

Cleveland Browns wide receiver Josh Gordon catches a pass during Wednesday's practice for this weekend's regular-season opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers at FirstEnergy Stadium in Cleveland.

After initially saying they would cut Gordon on Monday, the Browns made a decision to take advantage of the market and find a trade partner. He reportedly showed up late to the team's training facility Saturday and was suffering from a hamstring injury.

After initially saying they would release him, the Browns shifted to exploring trade options for Gordon. He missed two seasons with the team - 2015 and 2016 - due to his suspension. A 2012 second-round pick, Gordon's best year undoubtedly came in 2013, when he set career-best marks across the board with 87 catches, 1,646 yards through the air, and nine touchdown grabs.

In those five games, Gordon turned 18 catches into 335 yards and one touchdown.
