Coke said in a statement Monday that it is "closely watching" the growth of CBD, a non-psychoactive component in marijuana, as an ingredient in what it called functional wellness beverages. Coke added that despite their interest in the infused-drink market, "The space is evolving quickly". "No decisions have been made at this time".

According to the above-linked report, Coke is in talks with Aurora Cannabis, Canada's third-largest pot company.

Cowen analyst Vivien Azer cited growing consumer interest in CBD and said its properties lend the ingredient well to a sports recovery drink. It is believed to have anti-inflammatory, anti-nausea, anti-seizure effects, and because it doesn't make the user intoxicated, CBD products are marketed as having some of the benefits of cannabis without the intoxication.

Although the drinks wouldn't be appealing to those seeking a high, however, they could be incredibly helpful to people suffering from inflammation, pain, and cramping, according to the report.

Coca Cola is reportedly in "serious talks" to produce marijuana-infused drinks.

Diageo PLC, maker of Guinness beer, is holding discussions with at least three Canadian cannabis producers about a possible deal, BNN Bloomberg reported last month.

The marijuana industry has been attracting interest from a handful of big corporate names as Canada and a wave of US states move to legalize recreational use of the drug. The company, with its iconic brands ranging from Coke and Sprite to Powerade, announced it will acquire the Costa Coffee chain for $5.1 billion in August, and has expanded into other products including juice, tea and mineral water over the past decade. Coca-Cola shares were marginally higher in a US market struggling against expectations of another round of Chinese trade tariffs. That's a non-psychoactive ingredient derived from marijuana.

In June, the US Food and Drug Administration approved the epilepsy treatment Epidiolex, the first cannabis-based drug allowed in the United States.

A source told BNN Bloomberg Television that the two companies are "pretty advanced down the path" of forging a deal.
