Kipchoge smashes marathon world record in Berlin

Eliud Kipchoge has cemented his position as the greatest marathoner ever by winning his third Berlin Marathon and setting a new world record of 2:01:39.

Kipchoge said a record time was in his sights before the race, and after the opening few kilometres, it became clear his pacemakers would be pushed to the limit.

"I lack words to describe this day", said a beaming Kipchoge, a former world champion over 5,000 metres and marathon gold medallist at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics in 2016.

From an Irish perspective, his time would outstrip the best efforts of any Irish runner over the half-marathon.

For the women's race, Kenyan Gladys Cherono won in 2:18:11, followed by Ethiopians Ruti Aga in 2:18:34 and Tirunesh Dibaba in 2:18:55. Yet given Kipchoge's achievement it went nearly unnoticed.

Kipchoge, 33, and a team of three pacers took off and passed through the first 5K in 14:24 and then 10K in 29:21.

But shortly after 15 kilometres, which was reached in 43:38, two of the three pacemakers were unable to continue and withdrew from the race.

The leading duo went through 25km in 1:12:24, and as Kipsang continued to fade in the second group, Kipchoge left Boit, who dropped out of the race.

Within the space of a kilometre, he lost two pacemakers, forcing him to reassess and re-organise with just Josphat Boit to guide him. The only question was how far inside Kimetto's record he would get. Usually stoic and reserved, he pumped his arms and crossed the finish line in 2:01:40 to cut one minute and 17 seconds off Kimetto's record.

The Newspaper added: "When Kipchoge actually enters a race, he sends ripples through the field before his races even begin". "I was prepared to run my own race early so I wasn't surprised to be alone".

"It was hard. I ran my own race, I trusted my trainers, my programme and..."

Kimetto's record had stood since the Kenyan set it at the same course in 2014 but Kipchoge's run will likely take some time to break as it is the biggest improvement on the marathon record since Australian Derek Clayton shaved nearly two and a half minutes off the record in 1967.

Kipchoge has now won 10 of the 11 marathons he has run.
