Why the Browns chose to release Josh Gordon

The team provided no specifics about what prompted their decision to part ways with Gordon.

Shortly after the Browns released the statement, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported, citing sources, that Cleveland already has received some calls about trading Gordon and they might deal him before Monday.

Others were perplexed, wondering why the Browns would cut Gordon now after sticking with him for so many years.

It's interesting - Gordon missed the start of Browns camp as he continued to receive treatment for issues that kept him out of the National Football League entirely in 2015 and 2016, but he returned before preseason ended and was expected to be one of their top receivers.

In a stunning series of developments Saturday, Josh Gordon went from being ruled out of Sunday's game in New Orleans because of a hamstring injury to being set for release Monday. "We wish Josh well".

Additionally, Cleveland.com's Mary Kay Cabot reports that Gordon showed up late to the facility on Saturday and was described as "not himself", which the Browns believed was a sign of a potential relapse.

Gordon, who returned in December from a three-year suspension for multiple violations of the NFL's substance abuse policy, was expected to play a key role on a new-look Browns offense this fall.

Gordon had just rejoined the team on August 18. He caught a 17-yard touchdown pass in the Browns' season-opening 21-21 tie against the Steelers last weekend.

Now it's any guess what the next step might be for him and whether another team is willing to bring him on board.
