"On average 57 people are murdered a day, which brings us close to a war zone ... yet we are not in war."

Stock theft is up 7.2% and the murder rate is up 6.9%.

He said murders of girls, boys, and women have increased contributing 19.3% to the overall murder rate. There were 346 burglaries at residential premises which is also up on the previous year.

South African police say a man with a knife fatally stabbed two people and wounded several others at a mosque near Cape Town before police shot and killed the attacker.

Glencoe was little safer with five murders, two down from previous year, and 12 stocktheft cases.

Most of the murders took place in a small number of "no-go" areas that police have surrendered to gangs, prompting Bheki Cele, the police minister, to concede that his department had "dropped the ball" in its efforts to combat crime.

Nyanga, in the Western Cape, remained the murder capital of the country, with an increase in murders of 9.6%. The country's murder rate has increased the past six consecutive years.

The massive jump in crime and murder comes in unstable times.

He said the highest reported incidents of cash-in-transit heists are in Gauteng with 80 and KwaZulu-Natal with 30.

According to the last figures for the 2016/2017 period, murder had increased by 1.8 percent while sexual offences and the number of reported rape cases had both decreased by over 4 percent.

Carjackings, house robberies and business robberies, which had all increased during the last financial year had only slightly decreased by 2.3 per cent, 0.4 per cent and 3.1 per cent respectively in SA.
