A killing spree left six people dead in east Bakersfield, California, and the massacre took place in five different locations in less than 15 minutes, KBAK-TV reported.

According to the AP, there is no word on how the other victims were related.

They learned that the third victim who had run away was shot and killed just around the corner from the trucking company and near the refrigeration business.

Deputies say somebody else then showed up and fired at the husband and was also shot and killed by him. He shot his ex-wife and then turned the gun on a second man, 50-year-old Antonio Valadez, the sheriff's department said.

The man then ran from the scene, going to another nearby residence and fatally shooting two more people.

Asked if this qualified as a mass shooting, Youngblood said "absolutely", according to The Bakersfield Californian.

He said Casarez was a legal permanent resident of the U.S. The 50-caliber gun used in the shootings was legally purchased in 2004, Youngblood said.

Petra was the estranged wife of Cazarez, according to the sheriff, who said they were in the middle of divorce proceedings.

Three people were killed there and the shooter, armed with a large calibre handgun, fled. The suspect chased the man outside of the building and shot and killed him.

"This is the new normal", said Youngblood.

The gunman then allegedly carjacked a woman and her child. He said he emerged from his business in time to see the suspect running away.

Sheriff's deputies are interviewing some 30 people who witnessed the shootings.

"I'm certainly speculating right now", Youngblood said. The woman and child made it out safely and were able to escape from the vehicle, Youngblood said. He shot and killed his wife outside the trucking business, authorities said.

"Where we go from here is try to figure out why this started and why there are so many players involved in the connection, because obviously these are not random shootings", Youngblood told reporters.
