Trump tell-all by Bob Woodward hits stores today

Bob Woodward Trump book

Bob Woodward Trump book

Trump and several members of his administration who were quoted have called the book "fiction and fabrication".

Asked whether he was shocked by what he uncovered in his book, Woodward said: "I've never seen an instance when the president is so detached from the reality of what's going on".

Woodward depicts widespread White House dysfunction in "Fear", raising explosive allegations of a paranoid president whose own staff believes is unhinged and erratic. Our conversation, conducted via email and lightly edited for flow, is below.

Just a day earlier, The Washington Post published excerpts from an upcoming book by famed Watergate reporter, Bob Woodward. It's pointless to try to convince him of anything. "Maybe for the second book".

Woodward avoided using the word "lying", saying instead. Most of the books had ghost writers. First, the topic of Trump sells; and as Michael Wolff's sensational "Fire & Fury" showed, people devour the palace intrigue of this perplexing administration.

Cillizza: Woodward has done this sort of thing before with presidents.

During his business career, Trump wrote almost 20 books, including "The Art of the Deal".

To his credit, Woodward admits that the administration's Iran policy has left it without any major ally in the worldwide arena. It's more expansive, less targeted. Mattis, who is against a USA war with Iran, is out of step with the White House warmongers, who see the Pentagon chief as an impediment to their hawkish agenda. The White House's inability to focus on the business of the nation because of the scandal of the moment. The two men did get along famously, though.

"'It is mostly anonymous sources in here, why should anyone trust you?" Woodward both deepens and widens this narrative. "... I think you need to measure a presidency by what actually is done on the issues that affect people". He told me the United States has gotten nothing out of Afghanistan.

Everything is transactional to him. Mattis reportedly said that "we're doing this to prevent World War III". Books about Trump are all over best-sellers lists. I like him very much. They gave up in frustration out of fear that Trump would perjure himself. Trump also cited the fact that North Korea has not tested a ballistic missile or nuclear material in many months.

"Modi wanted to go to Camp David and have dinner, bond with Trump", the author writes.

Cillizza: Finish this sentence: "The lingering effect of Fear on Washington will be _".

Trump may have been referring to his conversation with Modi during their first meeting in Washington in June 2017.

"You can write a sensational nonsense book". Though with another author - maybe Mark Leibovich?

But according to Woodward, Cohn's message did not seem to connect.
