North Carolina Man Plans To Ride Out Hurricane Florence On His Boat

Sandbags surround homes on North Topsail Beach, N.C., September 12, 2018, as Hurricane Florence threatens the coast. As of 5 a.m., its maximum wind speeds remain at 110 miles per hour as it started to ingest drier air, says FOX 13's meteorologist Tyler Eliasen, however, it also means Florence's wind field has grown larger.

"A slow westward to west-southwestward motion is expected Friday night and Saturday".

Life-threatening storm surges of up to 13 feet have been forecast in some areas when the monster storm eventually makes landfall in North and SC. So, the winds will be winding down much quicker near the coast before those winds get up here. "We're still going to have a Category 4 storm surge". The storm is expected to stall out before moving to the north. 15-20 inches of rain will be possible in places like Raleigh.

And don't be fooled by the fact that Florence has weakened slightly to a strong Category 2 hurricane.

"It's kind of blocking the hurricane from moving northward very fast", Gresiak said.

"This general motion, accompanied by a gradual decrease in forward speed, is expected through today". Florence, the most ominous for USA residents, is expected to make landfall today. The hurricane center said Florence will approach the coast Friday and linger for a while before rolling ashore.

Forecasters said early Thursday that the storm's outer rain bands are approaching the North Carolina coast.

She is now one of a glut of tropical storms in the Atlantic, with Florence sparking mass evacuations as she heads towards landfall in the USA states of North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia.

Florence could bring wind-driven storm surges of seawater as high as four metres, and NHC director Ken Graham said on Facebook they could push in as far as three kilometres.

A steady stream of vehicles full of people and belongings flowed inland as local governor Roy Cooper urged locals to flee the "monster" storm - and nuclear power plants prepare to shut down. In reality, Florence was downgraded by the National Weather Service from a category 3 to a category 2 storm.

The gradually slowing but still life-threatening storm is moving northwest at 15 miles per hour (24 kph).

The storm is also predicted to bring historic rainfall of up to 35 inches to the Wilmington region. "Extensive damage to power lines and poles likely will result in power outages that could last a few to several days".

A significant number of gas stations, especially around Wilmington and the Raleigh-Durham area, were running out of fuel because of huge demand, according to Patrick DeHaan of the fuel price tracking service GasBuddy.com. "We're about to be in the thick of it".

The storm's center was about 170 miles southeast of Wilmington at 8 a.m. Thursday, according to a National Hurricane Center briefing. "We've just never seen anything like this. "On this track, we would still get flooding rain anywhere from 4-6" over the mountains/foothills and Charlotte area, to 6-10+ in our eastern counties and parts of upstate SC".

"All the way from Arizona to ME, if you just trace a diagonal line on a map and take it right through Chicago, most areas under that line have clear skies right now", he said.
