Nintendo is rolling out its Switch Online service next week

Nintendo announced on Wednesday that Nintendo Switch Online will launch in just less than a week, on Saturday, Sept. 18.

Nintendo's answer to PlayStation Network and Xbox Live will cost $3.99 per month after the free trial. Nintendo Switch Online, as it's called, will be launching on September 18, and beginning on that date, you'll need to pay a subscription fee in order to play games online. Special offers will also be made available, but there's not additional information on those at this time.

Getting onto Switch Online is going to require a firmware upgrade.

By the end of the month you'll no longer be able to play Nintendo games online for free, as Nintendo reschedules its cancelled Direct. Native voice chat was incorporated into the port of Fortnite, so we know it's at least possible with the Switch.

The membership will net users access to online play, classic NES games, save data cloud backup, and use of the Nintendo Switch Online mobile application.

There are two pricing plans: individual and family memberships. Switch Direct also will enable owners of current-release games like Splatoon 2, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, and Mario Tennis Aces to go online for cooperative gameplay with other subscribers worldwide.
