Lexus’ New ES ditches side mirrors for video cameras

The side mirrors that all cars use today are replaced on the ES with side stalks with video cameras in them. The luxury brand has installed small exterior cameras on the front doors, which it says provide drivers with a "clearer view of the vehicle's surrounding area". The side cameras are shaped in a way to prevent accumulation of rain and snow from blurring the view.

Alongside the more streamlined, sleeker look its new Digital Side-View Mirrors provides are a host of neat tech features created to help make the driving experience safer and more convenient.

The Digital Outer Mirrors show what is on the left, right and rear of the vehicle, displaying the camera's images on a monitor inside the cabin. In addition, the view of areas around the auto can be manually enhanced by the driver. Brightness will also be automatically adjusted to increase visibility at night and in bad weather, improving security. The cameras in the Digital Outer Mirrors transmit the images onto 5-inch display monitors located inside the cabin at the base of the front pillars. Come next month, Lexus will officially launch the "Digital Side-View Monitors" for the all-new ES. Their absence also means there's less drag and wind noise, which Lexus says results in a quieter, more comfortable cabin experience for passengers.

The system goes above and beyond by zooming out or enhancing each view depending on when you signal or put the auto in reverse.
