Democrats Ramp Up Attacks on Kavanaugh's Honesty After Hearings

Supreme Court nominee steers clear of Trump criticism

"It is becoming increasingly clear that Judge Kavanaugh has misled the Senate Judiciary Committee in a number of ways", Schumer said in a series of tweets Sunday.

Judge Brett Kavanaugh on the third day of his Senate confirmation hearings dodged questions about whether he would recuse himself from cases related to the special counsel Robert Mueller or the Russian Federation investigation if they reach the Supreme Court.

Bennet, a Democrat and Colorado's senior senator, released a statement via Twitter on Tuesday morning saying the nominee will threaten women's right to abortions and make decisions that would end up causing harm to the environment.

Despite extensive grilling by Senate Democrats during confirmation hearings for Supreme Court nominee Judge Brett Kavanaugh this week, Vice President Mike Pence says he is confident Kavanaugh has the votes to be confirmed and take a seat on the high court.

Kavanaugh has been strongly favored to win the 51 votes needed to be confirmed by the Senate.

Susan Collins of ME, who as a pro-choice Republican is seen as a possible defector in the confirmation effort, said on Friday she had not yet made up her mind. If approved by the full Senate, Kavanaugh would fill the vacancy created by the retirement of Justice Anthony Kennedy.

Beddard, a graduate student, said that she was drawn to protest Kavanaugh's nomination due to his stance on Roe v. Wade, a 1973 Supreme Court ruling that legalized abortion nationwide. "We are not engaging in some sort of charade; we believe this is a matter of life and death", Sarsour said. The nominee, enduring back-to-back days of lengthy questioning, remained in good humor, making no gaffes that were likely to derail his confirmation in a Senate narrowly controlled by Trump's fellow Republicans, despite the efforts of Democrats opposed to him. Between 2001 and 2003, he stole confidential letters, notes and talking points written by Democrats about Bush's prospective judicial nominees, giving them to Republicans so those nominees could prepare for questions raised during their confirmation hearings.

The documents show that on Christmas Eve 1998, Kavanaugh drafted an "Overall Plan" to colleagues providing his thoughts on bringing the independent counsel office's work to a close and suggesting they inform the attorney general that the findings against Clinton be left to the next president. But under questioning by Durbin on the scope of presidential power, Kavanaugh underscored judicial authority. "Judge Kavanaugh looks forward to addressing the Judiciary Committee in public hearings for the American people to view".

Among those testifying were two representatives of the American Bar Association, the leading USA professional group for lawyers, who said a panel that rates judicial nominees gave Kavanaugh a "well qualified" rating, the highest possible.

Democrats said Kavanaugh should not confuse birth control with abortion. The great sages of the Democratic Party are kids who know little-to-nothing about the role of the Supreme Court, as their testimonies demonstrated today.

Even if Kavanaugh could claim that he didn't have any hint at the time he received the emails that these documents were of suspect provenance - which I personally find implausible - there is no reasonable way for him to assert honestly that he had no idea what they were after the revelation of the theft. Also, Republicans declassified the documents several hours before Booker released them. And why would we share our precise strategy to fight controversial Republican nominations with the Republicans we were fighting?
