Bolton Says International Court 'Dead to Us'

Palestinians reject Trump bid to force talks through aid cut

United Nations ambassador Nikki Haley said the Palestinians' major demand - for millions of their refugees and descendants to return to lost homes in Israel - should be ruled out, and called for increased pressure on Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas. The US has also moved its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

"As such, and reflecting Congressional concerns, the Administration has decided that the PLO office in Washington will close at this point", the statement added. It has yet to release its own much-vaunted but largely unknown peace plan although it said it still intends to do so.

Although the United States does not recognize Palestinian statehood, the PLO has maintained in Washington a general delegation office that facilitates Palestinian officials' interactions with the USA government.

The US announced that it would close the mission on Monday, giving the staff several months to vacate.

Lucy Bar-On, a 60-year-old Israeli nurse, said the failure to move forward along the peace path charted by the interim agreements only emboldened hardliners: "They won, the extremists on the Israeli side and those on the Palestinian side". The United Nations General Assembly, however, voted in 2012 to recognize Palestine as what it calls a "member observer state". A government report based on the 2000 federal census found 72,000 people claiming Palestinian ancestry.

In response to the threats from the United States, the ICC released a statement that read: "One hundred and twenty-three countries from all regions of the world are party and pledged their support through ratification - as an instrument to ensure accountability for crimes that shock the conscience of humanity".

Go ahead. Make my day.

The International Criminal Court (ICC) has said it will continue "undeterred" in the face of threats by the US. "Israel supports these actions that are meant to make it clear to the Palestinians that refusing to negotiate and attacking Israel in worldwide forums will not bring about peace". The chairwoman of the House's Middle East panel, Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, R-Fla., and Sen. The mission served as the de facto Palestinian "embassy" to the US.

"'Unsigning' the treaty will not stop the court".

The Trump Administration has tried to revive the Israeli-Palestinian talks, but it has also shown less tolerance for Palestinian resistance.

He said the court was "crucial for ensuring accountability for the gravest crimes under worldwide law". The PLO and the Palestinian Authority demanded that the ICC prosecute Israel and its leaders for crimes against the Palestinian people, and the ICC recently declared that it was "gathering information" on those complaints.

It also stressed that it would only investigate and prosecute crimes "when the States concerned fail to do so at all or genuinely".

John Bolton, President Donald Trump's national security adviser, made the announcement in a speech to the Federalist Society, a conservative group, in Washington, DC, on Monday.

Bolton said neither Afghanistan nor any other government party to the ICC's Rome Statute has requested an investigation.

Critics of the administration's hard line argue that it won't change Palestinian government policy while harming ordinary Palestinians both in the United States and overseas.

The U.S. Defense Department objected to the possible probe and said it was committed to complying with the laws of war.
