Millman fought back to take a 4-3 lead before Djokovic finished him off by winning the final two points of the game.

It was clear that it could be a long night when the players battled for more than 15 minutes in the sixth game of the opening set, Millman saving four break points.

He has won the last 13 although Nishikori defeated the Serb in NY in the 2014 semi-finals on his way to a runners-up spot against Marin Cilic.

Osaka was an easy victor in her quarterfinal, eliminating unseeded Lesia Tsurenko of Ukraine 6-1, 6-1 in all of 57 minutes.

The No.21 seed gave Japan a men's and women's semi-finalist at the same grand slam tournament for the first time in the professional era with his 2-6 6-4 7-6 (7-5) 4-6 6-4.

"I personally have never sweat as much as I have here", he said.

It wasn't the cleanest of matches as the grueling heat at Arthur Ashe Stadium seemed to force both competitors into a slew of mistakes over the course of the four-plus hour match.

The Serbian star, who ended a 54-week title drought with his 13th Grand Slam title at Wimbledon, defeated the tenacious Aussie 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 to reach his 11th US Open semifinal in his last 11 appearances. Changing a lot of T-shirts, shorts, " said Djokovic, who will face 2014 US Open runner-up Kei Nishikori on Friday.

"Matches against Nadal and Federer, and Murray as well, have made me the player I am today because those were the guys that I always wanted to win against because those were the guys I had to beat in order to be the No. 1, to win Slams, and have the career that I had behind me".

Then late in the third, Djokovic pushed the serve clock to zero, and the second time John McEnroe quipped he did it on objective which drew a fault penalty and eventually he lost his break lead. Now, she needs to do it one more time to advance to her first career final.

Just like Federer two nights earlier against Millman, Djokovic looked in distress as Millman toiled valiantly to turn the match into a physical endurance test.

Kei Nishikori outlasted Marin Cilic in a rematch of the 2014 U.S. Open final, moving into the semifinals with a 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 (5), 4-6, 6-4 victory.

For Novak Djokovic the match with a sensational offender Roger Federer John Millman is not expected to become a serious challenge. Then after that I felt like third and fourth I played very well.

This night was cooler, as the temperature dipped into the 70s, but the humidity was above 80 percent, so with Millman drenched, he sought permission for a wardrobe change at 2-all in the second set.

"I forgot about it [beating Djokovic]", said Nishikori. Incredible. I have to take at least 10 shirts for every match.

'He's got one of the best two-handed backhands in the game and very quick, ' Djokovic added. "So it came down to a couple points".

Two inexplicable double-faults as the Japanese altered his return positions handed Nishikori the initiative and he produced a sumptuous backhand return victor down the line on set point to deepening Cilic's misery.

But Nishikori broke Cilic in the final game, capturing the match with a blistering service return. Mini-breaks were aplenty - seven in total - and it was Nishikori's mind games which tricked Cilic into surrendering the set.
