Ryder Cup 2018: Contenders for Jim Furyk's final captain's pick

US Ryder Cup captain Jim Furyk will name his first three wild cards on Tuesday

DeChambeau's selection on Tuesday as one of U.S. captain Jim Furyk's wildcard picks was a mere formality for the Florida-based golfer after he stormed to victory in the opening two legs of the FedEx Cup.

Woods will return after missing the past two Ryder Cups with a long-standing back injury.

Beyond the course, the presence of Woods will have a psychological impact in the opinion of Spieth.

"I haven't been part of the team playing-wise for six years", Woods told a news conference, flanked by fellow wildcard picks Phil Mickelson and Bryson DeChambeau. So it's good to have him in our corner for sure.

"This is mostly likely my last chance to go over to Europe and to be a part of a winning USA team in Europe".

"It was a great learning experience to see the passion that one of our late, great, team leaders, Payne Stewart, showed for the event", Woods noted.

The 14-time major champion has convinced Jim Furyk that his form and fitness are sharp enough for the biennial dust-up, which takes place at Le Golf National, near Paris, in three weeks' time.

"I have to say, we are all excited to see him healthy and playing the way he has, backed up against the wall, to play so well at The Open Championship, to play so well at the PGA", Furyk said about Woods.

"This team is young, full of guys in their 20s".

He made me understand how important the Ryder Cup is and from that moment on I always wanted to be part of each and every team.

Woods has a less than stellar record of 13-17-3 in seven Ryder Cup appearances. He also picked three additional vice-captains: Zach Johnson, David Duval and Matt Kuchar.

"It's incredible, it really is, to look back at the start of the year and now to have accomplished a goal like that", Woods said.

"But no, I want to win three in a row and get some world ranking points as well". There's a lot more obligations that come around with that but it's really an honour and I want to keep doing it.

"As the year progressed I gained some traction and was somehow able to get some high finishes and lo and behold I'm part of this team".

It will mean that nine of the 11 players on the team aiming to win for the first time on foreign soil in 25 years are major winners.

Furyk now has one further pick to make before his line-up is completed ahead of travelling to France to attempt to defend America's title.
