Five others were taken to a Cincinnati hospital for treatment.

Authorities have identified the gunman who allegedly killed three people and wounded two others at a bank in downtown Cincinnati as a 29-year-old OH resident. Initially, police had thought Santa Perez had entered at the loading dock and began shooting there, but Isaac said Friday that was because some of the shooting victims had ran to that area.

The shooter who killed three people in the lobby of a downtown Cincinnati office high-rise could have killed many more if his gun hadn't jammed during the four-minute rampage, city leaders said Friday. Two of them died, one is in critical condition, and one was in serious condition, the spokeswoman said.

The carnage unfolded in Fountain Square, a popular venue populated by office buildings, restaurants and retail stores.

"People in the immediate vicinity should remain on lockdown until further notice", Cincinnati police said in a tweet.

Police Chief Eliot Isaac said three or four officers exchanged gunfire with the shooter, identified as Omar Santa Perez.

Leonard Cain, one onlooker, told the Cincinnati Enquirer that he was about to enter the bank when someone warned him about the shooting.

"She walked in the door and he shot her", Cain says.

Reports of the shooting came in around 9 a.m. local time.

The area was cordoned off as police responded to the incident and worked to evacuate people inside the bank. "Square and surrounding area will be closed to foot traffic".

"It could have been any one of us", Cranley said.

Governor of Ohio, John Kasich commended police saying: "There was a senseless act of gun violence on the streets of Cincinnati this morning". Officers struck Perez multiple times, causing him to fall to the ground, Isaac said.

People in and around the building reported hearing a series of gunshots. "The fear in her eyes is hard to forget", he said.

A large police presence cordoned off a portion of the city's downtown, and several ambulances could be seen at the scene.

He then saw a woman who was also walking into the bank. "After that I started running", he told the Enquirer.

The University of Cincinnati Medical Center received victims with gunshot wounds, a woman and three men, said Kelly Martin, senior director of UC Health. "We didn't know where to go because we didn't have a backdoor", she told reporters.

"It's heartbreaking", Cranley said.

Police earlier characterized the incident as an "active shooter/officer involved shooting incident" in a tweet but did not elaborate.

Fifth Third, which operates 1,200 banking centers across several states, in a statement offered its "thoughts and prayers" for everyone "caught up in this bad event".
