Vacchiano: Jets made 'competitive' offer for Khalil Mack

Did the Steelers miss an opportunity not trying to trade for Khalil Mack

Did the Steelers miss an opportunity not trying to trade for Khalil Mack

The Raiders agreed to trade Khalil Mack - who the team selected with the fifth overall pick in the 2014 draft - to the Bears on Saturday, in a blockbuster move.

This is all happening just one day after the Rams signed Aaron Donald to a six-year, $135 million extension, and it appears Mack is going to one-up the reigning Defensive Player of the Year.

Raiders players, including Mack's best friend, Derek Carr, have thoughts on this. "He brings a ton on the field, but he really fits what we are building in our locker room, too".

The Raiders, still two years away from the lucrative move to Las Vegas, are more retooling than overhauling the roster.

The Bears acquired the 2016 National Football League defensive player of the year and three-time Pro Bowler along with a 2020 second-round pick and a conditional 2020 fifth-round pick in exchange for their 2019 first-round pick, 2020 first-round pick, 2020 third-round pick and 2019 sixth-round pick.

This tweet may seem fairly innocuous, but there was a huge piece of info in this tweet, "the type of financial commitment it would take to keep Mack could instead by used on multiple players to shore up a flawed defense".

Mack had been a holdout during the preseason as he sought to become one of the NFL's highest-paid defenders. Other than a few seasons lost to injuries, they were generally very good players still from age 27 to 30.

A person with direct knowledge of the trade told The Associated Press that Oakland will get first-round selections in 2019 and 2020, a sixth-rounder next year and a third-rounder in 2020. He later wrote, "What a shock". "And then we'll just kind of have to listen to his feedback on where he's at". Mack has 40.5 sacks in four seasons, with 10.5 a year ago and a career-best 15 in 2015.

Oakland hosts the Rams on September 10. The victor of this deal likely comes down to just how good the Bears become, and how good Mack remains. If Trubisky develops as Bears fans hope, Kevin White stays healthy and looks like the former No. 7 pick and Allen Robinson comes back from ACL surgery, the Bears can make some noise in the NFC this year and for the next handful of years. It makes total sense: the Jets have a roster on the rise, but badly need some pass-rush help.

In Chicago, Mack will now join a loaded Bears defense that includes Roquan Smith, Akiem Hicks, Leonard Floyd and Danny Trevathan.
