IFA 2018: Huawei Officially Reveals New Generation Kirin 980 Chipset

This is the first SoC that will make 7-nanometer process technology and the first platform with a new processor cores Cortex-A76.

Huawei Kirin 980 boasts a number of world firsts: the first 7nm mobile processor built around ARM's Cortex-A76 CPU and Mali-G76 GPU, the first with a Cat.21 smartphone modem that supports speeds up to 1.4Gbps, and the first chip to support 2,133MHz LPDDR4X RAM. This solution designates the large high-performance cores to handle immediate, intensive workloads; whereas high-efficiency cores to provide sustained performance; and ultra-efficiency cores to tackle everyday, light and background tasks to conserve battery. The P20 Pro and its three cameras, coupled with the Kirin 970, are already an fantastic combination, so anything that improves image quality could make future Huawei phones unassailable on the picture front in future.

Huawei has integrated the Mali-G76 GPU into the Kirin 980 and claims to deliver 46% greater graphics processing power at 178% improved power efficiency over the previous generation.

However, the Kirin 980 now has two of them and Huawei says this lets it carry out faster, more precise image recognition, and real time video recognition, too. This is accompanied by the fact that Huawei guarantees that this device improves the bandwidth by up to 20 percent and reduces latency by 22 percent compared to the Snapdragon 845. This is Huawei's brand new 7nm system-on-chip (SoC), and it packs a lot of technology in a remarkably small package.

There's also fair bit of focus on improving the photography experience. The new ISP also received improvements as part of the support for HDR (contrast control for selecting objects in different image regions) and motion tracking (recognition accuracy increased to 97,4%). Huawei claims the Kirin 980 comes with best-in-class performance, efficiency and connectivity features.

And, the Honor Magic 2, which was teased recently on Twitter with the sliding camera feature, is also expected to be powered by the Kirin 980 SoC. While the company did not announce new smartphone, it did confirm the launch date of the Mate 20 series and introduced a few new color options for its existing flagship smartphones - P20 and P20 Pro. The P20 series will now be available in Morpho Aurora, Pearl White, Golden Brown, and Elegant Black Leather. For more details, please visit HuaweiCanada.ca.

The first devices based on Kirin 980 will be smartphones Mate Mate 20 and 20 Pro, which will show in October.
