"SB 822 brings back net neutrality to California and restores the important protections that the FCC voted to eliminate last December". If signed into law by Governor Jerry Brown, it would ensure all California broadband customers have equal access to content on the internet. It would bar providers from collecting new fees from apps and sites as a condition of reaching internet users.

After a hard-fought battle, California's net neutrality bill is now all but certain to make it to the finish line that is Gov. Assembly Bill 2943 had already passed the Assembly and Senate and was one vote away from the governor's desk.

Governor Jerry Brown, also a Democrat, has not yet said if he would sign the bill into law. Ajit Pai, the FCC chairman appointed by President Donald Trump, pitched the repeal as a way to stop the federal government from "micromanaging the internet".

"My hope with this bill is for California to take a first step in incorporating blockchain technology into our day-to-day lives".

"The premise fundamentally of net neutrality is that we as individuals get to decide where we go on the internet as opposed to be told by internet service providers", said Sen.

A coalition of business groups, including the California Chamber of Commerce, say in a joint statement that they're all for gender equality but this isn't the way to go about it.

Many advocates for net neutrality find the California legislation hopeful.

The bill was passed in the state Senate yesterday with a vote of 23-11, reports the Verge. Almost three dozen other states are working on their own laws, and supporters hope California's bill will inspire even more states to follow suit. Many fear the "cabelisation of the internet" that would occur under the absence of net neutrality. They are sponsored by Common Sense Kids Action and have support from the Consumer Federation of America, Electronic Frontier Foundation and Privacy Rights Clearinghouse, among others. The rules prevented internet companies from exercising more control over what people watch and see on the internet. However, because changes were made in the Assembly, the Senate must vote on the legislation again.

The state Senate on Friday sent a broad proposal to Gov. "California could pass a gold standard net neutrality bill, providing a template for states going forward", the organization wrote. They call it a bailout of Pacific Gas & Electric company.
