May has promised to boost Britain's investment in the continent.

"What the government is doing is putting in place the preparations such that if we're in that situation we can make a success of it, just as we will make a success of the good deal I believe we're able to get and the good deal we're working to get", she said.

The government has held out the prospect of increased trade with non-European Union countries as one of the major selling points of Brexit as it prepares to leave the bloc, now its biggest trading partner, in March next year.

"African states will enter these discussions (with Britain) from a position of strength", said Clark.

"With exactly seven months until the end of the Article 50 process and less than two months ahead of the October European Council, we face the choice between the pragmatic proposals we are discussing now with the European Commission or no deal", Mr Lidington told France's largest federation of employers yesterday.

Britain's direct investment in Africa will mark a fundamental shift in focus from short-term poverty reduction to long-term economic growth.

As part of a renewed focus on Africa, Mrs May has said she wants the United Kingdom to become the continent leading's investment partner within the G7, overtaking the US.

May's comment, made to reporters as she headed to Africa to boost Britain's trade ties ahead of Brexit in March 2019, came after her finance minister Philip Hammond said last week that a no-deal departure from the European Union would damage public finances.

'Oh no!' British PM Theresa May breaks out her dance moves in South Africa.

"It is in the world's interest to see that those jobs are created, to tackle the causes and symptoms of extremism and instability, to deal with migration flows and to encourage clean growth", she added.

May also presented President Cyril Ramaphosa with the bell from the troopship Mendi, which sank in the Channel in 1917 drowning more than 600 mainly South African troops who were set to join the Allied forces fighting in World War I.

The Prime Minister was filmed dancing with school children as she began her trade tour in Africa.

"''Security and defence cooperation are very important steps to address Boko Haram and Islamic State in West Africa", May said.

She confirmed that Britain intends to carry over the EU's current partnership with six southern African countries - Botswana, Lesotho, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland and Mozambique.

The Prime Minister on Thursday is expected in Nairobi, where she will meet President Uhuru Kenyatta and see British soldiers training troops from Kenya and other African countries in the techniques needed to identify and destroy improvised explosive devices before they go to fight Al-Shabaab in Somalia.
