Halo on vehicle protects Leclerc after crash in Belgian GP

Sauber's Leclerc was also fortunate to emerge from the carnage without injury

That pushed Alonso into Charles Leclerc, with the orange auto spectacularly crashing over the Sauber.

Alonso was the blameless party, his auto sent airborne after Renault's Nico Hulkenberg misjudged his braking into the first corner and smashed into the back of the McLaren, sending the Spaniard flying.

Hulkenberg admitted his error, braking too late, had caused the crash. "I had a good restart after the safety auto, and after that it was a very smooth race", he added.

"When I hit the brakes, I instantly locked up the front wheels and just [slid] into Fernando".

After the race, Hamilton cryptically suggested that Vettel's dominant win had been aided by "tricks" on his Ferrari machinery.

Speaking after the accident, Alonso made a comparison with the huge accident triggered by Romain Grosjean at the same corner in 2012.

"It's being held in by bolts at present, but we want to see if it springs into a different shape so we can try and learn whatever we can from that".

"It's sad because you know to miss so much the breaking point is not a couple of metres". You arrive at a speed where it is impossible to negotiate the corner.

Meanwhile, ex-driver Felipe Massa added that "after seeing this, we can say the halo is attractive!" while Anthony Davidson, who was involved in testing the Halo system before its implementation, told Sky F1 viewers that "We all have to say and admit in a way that the halo did its job today and we now have to appreciate the reason why it's on the vehicle".

"On the positive side, we are all ok". The 31-year old also had three penalty points on his FIA super license. "Looking at the replay I think it helped him".

Alonso said there was no longer a need to ask whether the Halo was a good thing, while Williams chief technical officer Paddy Lowe congratulated those behind its development on "a tremendous result" for Leclerc.

The statement added: "It should be noted that since 2014 the FIA has introduced the penalty points system, which takes into account previous offences by a driver and can lead to a race suspension if 12 points are accumulated within a 12-month period".

The incident looked very similar to one of the most notable of Alonso's career.
