NYT Drops New Bombshell: Trump’s Lawyers Don’t Know What McGahn Told Mueller

White House counsel reported to be cooperating extensively with Mueller probe

White House counsel reported to be cooperating extensively with Mueller probe

The Times reported that McGahn had provided "detailed accounts" about episodes relating to whether Trump sought to obstruct justice, citing a dozen current and former officials and other sources.

The thesis of the New York Times story is that Mr. McGahn cooperated in a way that could hurt Donald Trump in order to protect himself and because he doesn't trust the President. "So bad for America!" "So, I think this is really a question of impression, not of anything that we have to worry about".

Dean was White House counsel to Nixon during Watergate.

Also on Saturday, Trump tweeted that he had encouraged McGahn and White House staff to cooperate with investigators.

Trump then went on to dub Mueller's obstruction of justice investigation as "McCarthyism at its WORST", referring to tactics used by late Senator Joseph McCarthy.

This morning, in a firestorm of tweets directed toward Special Counsel Robert Mueller and the Russian Federation investigation, President Trump issued one statement that is as outlandish and as confrontational as they come.

He also complained about a "disgusting new Board Member" at the Times, apparently a reference to the writer Sarah Jeong.

While Trump maintains that he OK'd the meetings, Dean believes that McGahn's enthusiasm may be "self-preservation".

Critics of the president have recently compared his decision to target the security clearances of critics and those involved in the Russian Federation investigation to the "enemies list" created by the Nixon White House to keep track of political opponents they meant to target with punitive measures. The retired special operations commander, William H. McRaven, called Brennan "one of the finest public servants I have ever known" and challenged Trump to revoke his security clearance also. "Rigged Witch Hunt!" Trump wrote on Twitter. Joseph McCarthy (R-WI), a odd analysis, given that Trump and McCarthy shared a lawyer, Roy Cohn, and given that, unlike McCarthy, Mueller has made nearly no public statements about his work outside of court.

Trump emphasized that he has authorized his aides to cooperate with Mueller.

Former director of national intelligence James Clapper told CNN on Sunday he had heard expressions of concern from within the Trump administration.

"People always view cooperation as giving up incriminating information but you can cooperate, tell the truth and not give up incriminating information because there's none to give up", Giuliani said.

Mueller's investigation has resulted in several guilty pleas by people once connected to the Trump campaign for lying to the FBI.

Sessions' move came hours after Trump said he had "total" confidence in Sessions, and shortly after then-White House press secretary Sean Spicer pre-recorded a Fox news Channel interview in which he said there was no reason for Sessions to step away.

The Times, however, said McGahn was in part motivated by fear of becoming a scapegoat if wrongdoing was discovered.
