In a revealing interview with The New York Times published Thursday night, Musk talked about his gruelling work schedule, the struggle to crank out his company's first mass-market electric vehicle - the Model 3 sedan - and the fallout over his public declarations about taking Tesla private.

In the wake of those and some other recent high-profile gaffes he's made in recent weeks, the Tesla chairman and CEO chose to sit for an hour-long interview with The New York Times. Taking Tesla private would finally put an end to short-sellers - you can't freely sell and buy private company stock - and allow Musk to finally get some much needed sleep.

The Wall Street Journal also reports that the SEC is examining if Tesla misled investors about production problem for its Model 3 sedan.

Tesla executives have tried for some time to recruit a Chief Operating Officer, a second in command that could hopefully keep Musk under control, but so far have failed to find anyone. "Weed is not helpful for productivity", he told the Times.

Musk also came under fire during the rescue of 12 children from a cave in Thailand where officials dismissed his plan to save them with a miniature submarine created by his rocket company SpaceX. Shares dove 8% Friday morning.

"The worst is over from a Tesla operational standpoint", he said. When asked if he regretted his Twitter post, Musk replied: "Why would I?"

Musk said he wasn't aware that the search for such an executive was now active, but the Times quoted other sources as saying such a search was indeed underway.

Musk, in a revealing interview, said he has been working up to 120 hours a week and needs Ambien to fall asleep at night.

"If you have anyone who can do a better job, please let me know", he told The Times.

The Times cited an unnamed source as saying some Tesla board members had expressed concern about this, apparently viewing the sleep medication as sometimes leading to "late-night Twitter sessions" rather than sleep.

The growing production pressures and increased scrutiny on Tesla seem to be taking an emotional toll on the company's CEO, Elon Musk.

The most recent headache came from Musk's now-infamous declarations about taking Tesla private.

Tesla said it took the allegations that Mr Hansen brought to the electric auto maker seriously and investigated.

"They can have the job".

Musk said he occasionally takes Ambien to help him sleep.

He explained that the August 7 tweet claiming assurance that funding for going private was secured was an attempt to be transparent, even though it surprised his own board and provoked questions from analysts about whether it violated stock market regulations. Is there someone who can do the job better?

As the Securities and Exchange Commission reportedly launches an investigation into Tesla chief Elon Musk's recent Twitter post, the executive has acknowledged having a awful year in terms of mental stress.

He said he left a July 31 meeting with the Saudi sovereign wealth fund "with no question that a deal with the Saudi sovereign fund could be closed, and that it was just a matter of getting the process moving". "They can have the reins right now".
