Jose Mourinho notoriously ends his affiliation with clubs within three years and as he enters his third season managing Manchester United there are serious questions over whether he will remain at Old Trafford beyond this season.

Not much has been heard from the French World Cup victor since then although there were whispers that he was placed on a shortlist by Manchester United management as a backup should Mourinho decide to depart Old Trafford.

The Daily Mirror, via French publication L'Equipe, reports that the former Real Madrid coach "wants to succeed Jose Mourinho at Manchester United as early as next season".

The pressure is on current United boss Mourinho to close the gap on rivals Manchester City, who won the Premier League title last season by a 19-point margin.
