At his inauguration, Trump said that America stands "at the birth of a new millennium, ready to unlock the mysteries of space". The Air Force now oversees some of the most critical space-based capabilities.

The service said earlier this year that it delayed the launch of the first GPS III satellite, part of a $5.4 billion program, to October at the earliest, from May.

Much the same was said by Trump's Secretary of the Air Force Heather Wilson. Beijing has already created a separate entity dedicated to militarizing space. "Space is an environment that we're supposed to work together peacefully in".

President Donald Trump ordered the creation of Space Force in June, arguing the Pentagon needs it to tackle vulnerabilities in space and assert U.S. dominance in orbit.

But for critics, the force is an expensive and unnecessary step in the wrong direction.

Pence said the administration is keen on "accountability" and will create a single civilian position reporting to the secretary of defense to oversee the growth and expansion of the new branch. The country needed a branch that could "address issues unique to this domain". The Air Force does this already.

Anyway, we'll get more details on what the Space Force actually entails in coming days.

In an email to supporters hours after Thursday's announcement, Trump's 2020 re-election campaign manager Brad Parscale said the campaign would be "selling a new line of gear" branded with Space Force insignia - and asked recipients to vote on six possible logos. In a speech at the Pentagon, Pence said the proposed organization would be the sixth branch of the armed forces, sitting alongside the Army, Navy, Air Force, and so on. He also says that the current system, with the Air Force in charge of military space operations, is not ideal.

In a letter to Pence, he said he did 'not wish to add a separate service that would likely present a narrower and even parochial approach to space operations, ' adding it would create extra bureaucracy and cost.

Pence called out the military activities of Russian Federation and China in his speech at the Pentagon today.

While China launched a missile in 2007 that tracked and destroyed one of its own satellites, Russian Federation claims to have tested aircraft-deployed missiles that can take down satellites. "But recently, our adversaries have been working to bring new weapons of war into space itself".

In June, President Trump said that it wasn't enough for the U.S.to have a presence in space. "There is an anxiety in America that China and Russian Federation are catching up and that they can't afford to lose their advantage in space".

"Space Force all the way!" the president tweeted.

Neither the White House nor the Pentagon can create a Space Force without the approval of Congress, though Trump has pushed for the plan many times since becoming president.

The vice president mentioned four major, fundamental steps that the USA government will take to create a Space Force.

A US Space Command would be created as an interim step, to be led by a four-star officer and drawing forces from other armed services, he said. This division will come under the ambit of the Space Force. "Space is, in his words, a war-fighting domain just like land and air and sea".
