The Fredericton Police Department Twitter page also confirms that two of the people killed in the shooting are police officers. MacCoubrey added that it sounded as if the gunfire was coming from the middle of the square in his apartment complex.

Witnesses said the shooting occurred at an apartment complex, and local media images showed emergency vehicles converging on a tree-lined residential street.

"We extend our sincerest condolences to Chief Leanne Fitch, the officers of the Fredericton Police Force, and everyone affected by today's events", the city said in its tweet.

MacCoubrey says police have been searching the complex and he's been sitting on the floor of his home away from windows.

"It was scary", said Marlene Weaver, who was in bed on Friday morning when she heard shots ring out in her neighbourhood.

Goodale says Fredericton police are handling the incident with assistance from the RCMP.

One person is in custody, they said, and there was no further threat to the public.

A suspect is in custody, and the crime scene has been "contained", police said.

Multiple fatalities have been reported after an early morning shooting in Fredericton, New Brunswick.

Bill Blair, a former Toronto police chief who just last month was tapped to serve as Trudeau's minister of border security and organized crime reduction, offered comfort directly to Fredericton's police chief.

"Doors are locked and everybody's inside", he said.
