"He's doing an wonderful job for his community", Jordan, now owner of the National Basketball Association's Charlotte Hornets, told NBC News through a spokesperson. "Tweet about that. (A) professional athlete doing a good thing for his community".

Late Friday night, Trump tweeted about James' interview with Don Lemon on CNN.

First lady Melania Trump stepped away from her husband's criticism of National Basketball Association star LeBron James to compliment his work on behalf of children and even offer to visit his school for at-risk children.

"(Trump) kinda used sports to kinda divide us", James told Lemon.

Mr Trump wrote: "Lebron James was just interviewed by the dumbest man on television, Don Lemon".

First Lady Melania Trump contradicted her husband Donald Trump a day after United States President slammed basketball star LeBron James for his charity work.

According to a senior White House official, Mrs. Trump was not "taking sides" in the online feud between James and the President. Grisham said Trump would even consider visiting the school that James opened last week in Ohio.

He acknowledged his support of James, sure, but he in no way admonished the President for his racist attack on Lemon and James.

Earlier this week, James told CNN during an interview with Don Lemon that sport had offered him the opportunity to meet people of different backgrounds and race. He also ended by tweet by stating he preferred Michael Jordan.

James, one of the most prominent athletes in the U.S., has been critical of Trump for years.

This is the second recent instance of the first lady has issuing a public statement that seems to counter the president. James also said he has no interest in sitting down for a face-to-face meeting Trump. Their history includes trading barbs when Trump revoked an invitation to the White House for the Warriors.

Lakers owner Jeanie Buss said the franchise "could not be more proud to have LeBron James as part of our Lakers family".

OH governor John Kasich, a Republican like Trump, and former newscaster Dan Rather also criticized the President's tweet about James.

This is not the first time Melania Trump has publicly expressed views or taken action that demonstrated an independent streak, CNN reported.

In 2013, Mr Trump tweeted: "Lebron is a great player and a great guy!"
