Osinbajo had summoned Daura alongside Ibrahim Idris, Inspector-General of Police (IGP) over the siege laid to the national assembly earlier in the day.

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo - who is acting as head of the country while Buhari is on holiday in London, ordered the dismissal of DSS chief Lawal Musa Daura "with immediate effect".

Seiyefa who replaces th sacked DG, Lawal Musa Daura, was in the villa ostensibly to receive briefing from the Acting President.

Insiders report that Daura was arrested just shortly after he was sacked by the Acting President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo for "breaching national security". As I speak, we understand he is collecting signature for the Senate President's impeachment.

Osinbajo condemned the unauthorised standoff at the National Assembly complex, describing it as "a gross violation of constitutional order, rule of law and all acceptable notions of law and order".

The acting President, therefore, assured Nigerians that all persons within the law enforcement apparatus, who participated in "this travesty" would be identified and subjected to appropriate disciplinary action.

Buhari plans to seek a second term in the February 2019 presidential vote but the loss of influential figures and divisions within his party could cost him support from powerful patronage networks and among voters.

It was learnt that lawmakers as well as staff of the National Assembly were initially prevented from entering the premises by operatives of the DSS.

That move appeared to have been abandoned following public outcry.

Nigeria's senate minority leader has resigned from his position amid speculations he might officially defect from the opposition party to the ruling party on Wednesday.
