'I don't know when he chose to do this, but I'm very familiar with how this murder was committed and there was a lot of planning that went into this, ' Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo said at a press conference on Wednesday. Police said the doctor was likely targeted and implored witnesses to come forward with any information.

Joseph James Pappas, 62, should be considered armed, risky and possibly suicidal, Houston police Chief Art Acevedo said at a news conference Wednesday afternoon.

"This man is risky".

Police are searching for Joseph James Pappas in Houston and have warned he should be considered armed, risky and possibly suicidal.

Acevedo said there's other evidence that leads them to believe Pappas is the shooter, but did not provide additional details.

Police have identified a suspect in the fatal shooting of doctor who was once the person physician to President George W. Bush - but the gunman is still at large.

Police issued an arrest warrant for Pappas after they searched his home and did not find him.

"If you think about his fascination with the doctor and the fact that he ends up killing this man in cold blood, the only thing we can think of is the connection between his mother dying over 20 years ago during surgery", Acevedo said.

"There was a lot of planning that went into this, and sadly, some skill", Acevedo told reporters.

Joseph James Pappas, 65, is charged with capital murder.

The friend of suspect Joseph James Pappas, 62, told Houston's KHOU-TV that he could be hunting his next victim, adding that cardiologist Dr. Mark Hausknecht was "number one on the list".

Dr Hausknecht treated President Bush in 2000 for an irregular heartbeat after the former politician complained of lightheadedness.

Police received a tip on Tuesday after CCTV was released of the suspect. "There was text that he sent to someone that said he was going to kill himself", Acevedo said. He worked for Harris County as a peace officer and a reserve officer from May 1983 to July 2013.

Cops had previously released surveillance images of the shooting, which occurred as Hausknecht was riding a bicycle to work, and shared eyewitness testimony of the shooting.

At the time of the doctor's death, former President Bush called him "a fantastic cardiologist and a good man".

The renowned cardiologist and the suspect were seen shortly before the shooting riding their bicycles on South Main Street, police said. "I will always be grateful for his exceptional, compassionate care", the statement read.
