Urban Meyer Knew Of Ex-Assistant's Domestic Violence History

Ohio State University head football coach Urban Meyer has been placed on paid administrative leave amid an investigation into what Meyer knew about alleged abuse by an assistant coach.

The alleged victim, Courtney Smith, claims that she told Meyer's wife Shelley about the violence - in an interview with reporter Brett McMurphy.

Courtney opened up about the reported domestic violence.

Courtney said she agreed to a face-to-face meeting with de Fries at a Panera Bread restaurant a few days after Zach was arrested in 2009. Ryan Day will serve as acting head football coach during the investigation. Shelley Meyer is a registered nurse and is employed as an instructor at Ohio State.

Ohio State may be in violation of Title IX, which states: discrimination on the basis of sex, can include sexual harassment, rape, and sexual assault.

"I got a text late (Monday) night something happened in 2015", Meyer said at Big Ten Media Days. His firing came in the wake of reports that an OH judge issued a protection order to keep Smith from within 500 feet of his ex-wife. I know nothing about it. Speaking with McMurphy, Courtney said, "All the [coaches] wives knew". I sent her some pictures.

Koffel said Wednesday that Smith never informed Meyer about the criminal-trespass charge even after Koffel told Smith to do so. Those charges were dropped, and Courtney told McMurphy she was pressured to drop them by longtime Meyer consigliere Hiram de Fries and by her husband's parents. That said, a text message exchange between Courtney Smith and the wife of one of Meyer's long-time football staffers showed that the head coach had indeed talked to Zach Smith about the allegations of domestic abuse in October of 2015. I spoke to her on the phone. I said, 'That's fine.

"Zach once told me if he ever got fired and this all comes out: 'I'll take everyone at Ohio State down with me, '" Courtney told McMurphy.

"I was scared. I did tell my parents".

Urban Meyer led the Buckeyes to the national championship in 2014. Meyer said the decision was a "tough call" but added that "it was in the best interest of our team". "This has to stop", Courtney said. "They have a duty to do something to help, instead of worrying about winning games, or instead of worrying about who his mentor is and who his family is and trying to protect that; somebody's safety and the safety of their children and the environment they're in needs to be more important".

As we at time of publication await any official response from the Meyers and the school, we anticipate the possibility that Meyer can stand on the razor-thin implausibility that his wife never actually let him know about any of what was going on in 2015 and that the other conversation about his conflicted feelings was entirely unfounded.

Courtney: "I don't really care".
