Rand Paul will vote to confirm Brett Kavanaugh

Schumer calls on Bush to release Kavanaugh White House documents

Brett Kavanaugh is having his first meeting with a Democratic senator since becoming President Donald Trump's nominee for the Supreme Court.

Paul tweeted to announce his support Monday, writing, "After meeting Judge Kavanaugh and reviewing his record, I have made a decision to support his nomination".

Paul said last week he was "very concerned" about Kavanaugh's positions on privacy and the Fourth Amendment and remained undecided.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer is ramping up Democrats' efforts to obtain documents involving Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh by asking former President George W. Bush to release mountains of files from the judge's time in the White House.

Sen. Rob Portman (R-Ohio) says Democrats ought to only request "relevant" Brett Kavanaugh records from his time in Bush White House.

He said that many of those documents are irrelevant to Kavanaugh's legal history, and that the nominee would not be able to adequately comment on them.

Politico doesn't charge for access to its website, and one reason is headlines like this from Monday: "Inside Democrats' strategy to defeat Kavanaugh: Schumer is pushing red-state Democrats to stay neutral for as long as possible and raising pressure on moderate Republicans".

The senator also solicited questions for the judge from West Virginians, asking them to post their concerns on Manchin's website. Joe Manchin (D., W.Va.), one of three Democrats who supported Neil Gorsuch past year for the Supreme Court.

While Paul says nominees should be judged on their character, views, and opinions, he notes nobody will "ever completely agree with a nominee". Joe Manchin (D-WV), Jon Tester (D-MT), and Joe Donnelly (D-IN) back Kavanaugh as well.

Further, Murkowski and Collins support abortion rights and Kavanaugh has been seen by abortion supporters as a potential fifth vote to overturn the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision legalizing abortion. Joe Donnelly of IN and Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota, who both supported Haspel, were the others.

With Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., absent due to his health, Republicans need every member of the slim 51-49 majority to confirm Kavanaugh.

Judge Kavanaugh will have my support and my vote to confirm him to the Supreme Court. All three are up for re-election in states Trump won easily in 2016.
