The Reds have been the biggest spenders in the summer transfer market, spending significant sums on goalkeeper Alisson and midfielders Fabinho, Naby Keita and Xherdan Shaqiri.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has laughed off Manchester United counterpart Jose Mourinho's attempt to ramp up the pressure on him ahead of the new campaign.

"One of my biggest goals in life is to make Jose smile - it doesn't happen very often", Klopp was quoted as saying by The Independent.

The Liverpool boss was today asked by Sky Sports whether he thought Mourinho was trying to entice him in a battle of mind games.

"We would never talk about Manchester United unless somebody asks me about it but I am polite enough to give an answer if somebody asks me".

"It's a free world and I have no problem with Jose", said the German.

"We accept it like that's how the world is now, but the moment when you're in the middle of the storm, then you will think, 'Wow, that's really different to how it was in the good old times'".

Speaking after United's penalty shoot-out win over AC Milan in the International Champions Cup, the Portuguese said: "Maybe this season, finally, you [the media] demand that they win".

"Loris Karius and Simon Mignolet are both outstanding goalkeepers but we have outstanding midfielders and strikers and defenders but we still brought in [players in those positions] any way to help us make the next step".

"I didn't speak to anyone for a while, to be honest", he said.

But Klopp has dismissed those comments before Saturday's meeting between the two sides in MI in the International Champions Cup.

"But the opponents don't sleep".

They have bolstered their squad across all positions and have added the quality needed to finish in the top half of the table at least. We only feel a bit better prepared than past year.

After Saturday's tie against United, Liverpool take on Serie A sides Torino and Napoli in their final pre-season ties of the summer. It's an impressive building, it's cool.
