HBO has announced that the final season of Game of Thrones will commence in early 2019

HBO president of programming Casey Bloys was very effusive about theGame of Thrones prequel pilot during the network's TCA executive session, praising the script by Jane Goldman (Kick-Ass, Kingsman), which beat out four other script contenders to get a pilot green light.

Bloys did not announce a date yet for Goldman's pilot.

Bloys spoke with Entertainment Weekly at an event for the Television Critics Association and revealed his thoughts on the script for the series finale of the popular show.

He did, however, offer this tiny soundbite: "It's pretty great".

As for Game of Thrones season 8, Bloys refused to get specific about what fans could expect from the final season or even when it will air, saying only that it will be sometime during "the first half of next year".

Fans wait for guests to arrive at the world premiere of the television fantasy drama "Game of Thrones" series 5, at The Tower of London, England on March 18, 2015. Each episode is said to be almost as long as a movie, which should make up the difference.

The first five seasons of the show were adaptations of Martin's novels A Game of Thrones, A Clask of Kings, A Storm of Swords, A Feast For Crows and A Dance with Dragons.

You can read much more about what that plot description could mean right here, but for now, HBO has confirmed that the untitled spin-off will not begin filming this October, as previously rumored.

"When I say we're hoping to go into production in 2019, we have to find a director, we have to cast it", Casey added. So, while they're surely sad to see it go, they're going to do their best to keep the ball rolling with at least one spin-off, with several others in development.
