Trump rejects Putin's proposal to let Russian Federation interrogate United States citizens

Donald Trump invites Vladimir Putin to visit Washington in autumn

On Thursday Trump tweeted that he was looking forward to a second meeting with Putin.

His departure marked the end of a controversial week for Trump: The president sparked a firestorm on Monday when he refused to criticize Russian Federation and sided with Putin's denials of election interference during a joint press conference with the leader.

"I mean I had these - some of these fools from the media saying, 'Why didn't you stand there, look him in the face, walk over to him, and start shouting at him?' I said, 'Are these people insane?"

What reaction is there to the planned Putin visit?

U.S. Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats seemed to have been in the dark about Russian President Vladimir Putin's White House invitation.

"That's going to be special", he added, prompting laughter from the audience. "The challenges posed by Russian Federation are no different, and I hope the president shares my conviction that American strength, not weakness, is the best way to preserve a secure world in the face of adversaries like Russian Federation".

And that comes as cleanup from the first meeting in Helsinki has continued with no letup.

Russia's ambassador to the U.S., Anatoly Antonov, expressed hope Thursday that "the verbal agreements between Putin and Trump will be fulfilled" - though the substance of any such understandings remain murky, not least because the main business was conducted in the two hours of discussions between the two leaders with only translators joining them.

After Donald Trump faced a slew of criticism for apparently siding with Vladimir Putin during a press conference in Helsinki, the U.S. leader added a new element to his account of the summit on Wednesday.

That next meeting may be at the White House.

Foreign policy analysts also pushed back on Trump's view that the only alternative to a "good" relationship with Putin is war.

He also claimed that he has been 'far tougher on Russian Federation than any president in many, many years'. With his base still behind him, Mr Trump appears ready to press on with his efforts.

Word that another Trump-Putin meeting is being planned came as the White House sought to clean up days of confounding post-summit statements by Trump on Russian election interference. U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told ABC Radio Australia on Thursday the two leaders "broke some ground across a broad range" of issues.

Mr Trump has since done an about-face and said he meant to say he saw no reason why it "wouldn't" be Russian Federation, when he said that he saw no reason why it "would" be Russian Federation. -Russian cooperation on Syria's future.

Warning the American public about disinformation could allow people to make better-informed decisions, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein said at a security conference in Aspen, Colorado.

Putin has denied any such meddling.

Trump told CNBC in an interview that aired Friday that a second meeting with Putin is "in the works" following the "tremendous discussion" they had in Helsinki on Monday.

"I'm different than other presidents - I'm a deal-maker", Trump said at one point.

Allowing Russian officials to interview Mr McFaul would be a violation of the longstanding tradition that foreign diplomats have legal immunity.

Still, from Putin's perspective, the summit put Moscow and Washington on "the path to positive change".

Following his summit with Vladimir Putin, President Trump has been fighting accusations he failed to stand up to the Russian leader.
