Guardiola: It would've been a mistake for Jorginho to join City

Pep Guardiola's squad departed on Tuesday and are scheduled to play Borussia Dortmund in Chicago, Liverpool in NY and Bayern Munich in Miami during the next 11 days.

Jorginho was close to joining City this summer.

Guardiola allowed defensive midfielder Yaya Toure to leave in the summer and wants a replacement.

Guardiola also spoke of his disappointment in missing out on transfer target Jorginho after the Italy midfielder joined Chelsea on a five-year deal last weekend. We thought already it was done.

"All my advice for the players is they have to play where they want to go".

"It would have been a mistake if he'd come here when he wanted to go to Maurizio and Chelsea". English football received an exceptional player at the end. If they are not mentally and physically ready, they won't come back.

The plan for Gomes, outlined to him before he agreed to sign, has always been to keep him around the first team squad until at least January, and then decide from there the best course of action.

"It's been a pleasure working with academy players over the last few days". We have solutions we have Fernandinho, [Ilkay] Gundogan, Oleksandr [Zinchenko], [Fabian] Delph.

"Perhaps my style of play is not something that is seen in England".

Zinchenko spent much of last season as an emergency left-back following the cruciate knee ligament injury suffered by Benjamin Mendy.

"At this moment, I play for Manchester City and I'm so happy to be part of this team".

But one player who will be involved against Dortmund is out-of-favour goalkeeper Joe Hart.

"No, I'm not disappointed", Guardiola said. "If not, he will stay here".

"Today everyone watches the Premier League so I have watched plenty of it in my time", Jorginho said on the Chelsea website.

City play Chelsea in the Community Shield on 5 August before opening their league campaign at Arsenal a week later.
